Radford Dale – The Winery of Good Hope
The philosophy driving Radford Dale is to produce wines with little pretence, and without compromise. These wines are made to be faithfully site-driven wines, natural and balanced. Quality dictates everything that Radford Dale stands for. All grapes are hand-picked and rigorously hand-selected over a sorting table. Not a single grape finds its way into this wine unintentionally.
Winemaker and owner, Alex Dale’s goal has long been to be singular in its style by bucking the trend of being unnecessarily in your face. Gravity succeeds brilliantly. Each grape contributes to this ultra-premium wine. The Shiraz lends its signature spice and supple body. Blueberry backbone and ripe tannins are the contributions of the Cab. Lastly (and certainly not least), the Merlot contributes red berry and suave mouthfeel. Under the careful eye of Alex, the blend matured brilliantly and it all comes together in epic fashion.
Tasting Note: Radford Dale Gravity 2004
2004 Gravity is a blend of 28% Cabernet Sauvignon, 47% Merlot and 25% Shiraz grapes grown on spectacularly beautiful vineyards, and which ripen under warm days complimented by cool ocean breezes. Each grape variety contributes its own character to this unique and highly prized wine. This wine can be enjoyed with foods of intense flavours and heavy sauces but is also wonderful flying solo.
Tasting Note: Radford Dale Gravity 2005
Bright medium ruby colour shows upfront. At first reticent, with a slightly reduced nose that combines dark berries, plum, tobacco and eucalyptus; The body is sweet, tactile and deep, with flavours of cassis, chocolate, liquorice and mint. Rather claret-like and Old-World in style but with extra sweetness. A broad, mouth-filling wine that’s still young but already shows a smooth texture.
Tasting Note: Radford Dale Gravity 2006
2006 was one of those vintages we wished we had every year. After a cold winter, with excellent rainfall; spring gave rise to an excellent and even flowering. The summer, with its customary long hot days, was characterised by its cooler than usual nights. This gave rise to a longer ripening season and grapes with a beautiful natural balance. The 2006 Gravity is a blend of 50% Shiraz, ±30% Cabernet Sauvignon, ±20% Merlot, and a soupcon of Viognier.
